This documentation contains all the information necessary to start using the Miatel platform and the features of Miatel products

In this guide, we'll show you how to set up and send your first SMS marketing campaign.

Create a new campaign

To create a new campaign, navigate to the SMS campaigns page in the side menu and click on the "Create" button.

In the appeared campaign settings window, on the first stage, please fill in the following:

1. Campaign name (can be anything)

2. Choose the sending time from three options - "Immediately", "Select from the file column", or "Choose a specific time". If you select "Choose a specific time", it will be your local time (your computer's time).

3. Upload the table in the format xlsx or csv with three required columns - the sender's name (Sender ID), the recipient's number, and the message text. In addition, you can specify the time of sending in the fourth column. The time must be specified in the format 31.12.2024 23:59:59

After filling out all three fields on the first stage, proceed to the next step.

On the second page of the campaign settings, match the column values with the data from the table and click next

At the final stage of campaign setup, select an account, check the correctness of the campaign settings and click the "Create" button.

After clicking it, the message will be sent according to the specified time of sending.

Sender ID is the name or number that is displayed as the sender of the SMS message to the receiver of the SMS message. It identify your business and help your customers recognize and recall your brand.

History Page Overview

The History page on Miatel’s platform is designed for tracking and analyzing SMS messages. It provides users with detailed information about each message, including its status, recipient, sender, and the operator involved. Users can filter messages by date, time, and status, allowing for precise monitoring of message delivery and identifying any issues that may have occurred.

The table displays comprehensive data for each SMS message, allowing users to track important details such as time of sending, recipient information, and message status:

The status allow you to sort messages based on several criteria, including:

E.164 is an international standard developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that defines the format of telephone numbers for the global Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and other data transmission networks.

Using Alphanumeric Sender ID

You can send SMS messages with an Alphanumeric Sender ID using the Miatel Platform. However, please note that due to local restrictions in certain countries, SMS messages with an Alphanumeric originator may not be delivered or may require pre-registration before use.

Alphanumeric Sender ID

Alphanumeric Sender ID is unique combinations of alphabetic characters and numbers utilized to represent your business identity. In certain regions, it's necessary to pre-register alphanumeric sender IDs with local carriers. Refer to our comprehensive list of country-specific requirements for Sender IDs for precise guidelines.

Short Code Sender ID

A short code sender ID is a phone number consisting of three to six characters utilized for sending and receiving SMS messages. There are no limitations on the number of SMS messages you can dispatch per day using a short code sender ID, enabling large-scale communication with your customer base.

Long Code Sender ID

A Long Code Sender ID is a standard phone number used to send and receive voice calls and SMS messages. These phone numbers are commonly referred to as "long codes" (10-digit numbers in many countries) when differentiating them from SMS short codes (5-6 digit numbers).

Message Encoding

SMS messages can be encoded using different character sets, notably GSM-7 and Unicode. The choice of encoding impacts the maximum length of a message and the number of segments required for transmission.

Types of Encoding

GSM-7 (7bit)

GSM-7 encoding, the standard for SMS messages, accommodates most characters within its 128 Latin characters, numbers, and select special characters repertoire. Each character occupies one slot within the message, allowing for a maximum message length of 160 characters.

• CR is a Carriage Return control, or filler

• ESC is an Escape to extension table

• SP is a Space character

The following characters are included in the GSM-7 character set, but they represent two characters when used in a text message:

Unicode

Unicode encoding supports a broader spectrum of characters, including non-Latin languages, emojis, and special symbols. However, each Unicode character occupies two slots, effectively halving the maximum message length to 70 characters.

SMS segments

When an SMS message exceeds the character limit, it undergoes segmentation, dividing it into multiple segments for delivery. Each segment, although sent separately, is seamlessly reassembled on the recipient's device to form the original message.

Maximum number of segments

SMS segmentation is not without limitations. Exceedingly long messages may not be delivered, as carrier networks have constraints on the maximum message length. For GSM-7 messages, the maximum length is 1377 characters, while for Unicode messages, it's 603 characters.

Best Practices

To optimize your SMS campaigns:

• Keep messages concise and within recommended character limits to ensure successful delivery.

• Use GSM-7 encoding for messages containing only Latin characters and numbers, and Unicode for messages with non-Latin characters, emojis, or special symbols.

• Avoid excessive use of special characters or formatting to minimize the number of segments required for transmission.

What is DLR?

DLR (Delivery Report) is status of a sent SMS message that provides information about the delivery status of an SMS message. It plays a key role in monitoring and analyzing the effectiveness of SMS campaigns, providing the sender with notifications of delivery or potential delivery issues in real time. These notifications come from the SMS aggregator or mobile network operator and allow the sender to track whether the message was successfully delivered or encountered issues.

How DLR works

The process of DLR begins with sending an SMS message, which is directed to the Short Message Service Center (SMSC). The SMSC processes the message, attempting to deliver it to the recipient. After the delivery attempt, the SMSC generates a DLR, indicating either the successful message delivery or issues encountered during delivery.

When the recipient receives the message, their device sends feedback to the SMSC, confirming receipt. This allows the SMSC to generate a DLR with the corresponding delivery status.

Types of DLR

There are several types of DLR statuses that can indicate different delivery results. "Delivered" means the successful delivery of the message, "Not delivered" indicates problems with delivery, such as unavailability of the recipient or rejection of the message by the operator. You can find out about other DLR statuses .

Increasing DLR rate

To increase the DLR rate, it's important to update the customer database by removing invalid numbers. Updating contact information is also essential. Optimizing message content and following carrier rules and recommendations can help improve message delivery. Regular monitoring and analysis of delivery reports can identify issues and help optimize SMS campaigns for better results.

By clicking on an existing user in the user profile, you can assign the user as the administrator of the account or restrict his access rights to the sections of the account:

Use cases

You can set up different access rights to sections of the Miatel platform for different employees of your company.

For example, for an accountant, you can provide access only to the Billing section for checking and replenishing the balance. For the support agent of your product, you can provide access to the History of sent messages without the text of the message itself.
